Office 365 the Risks you Need to Know

Microsoft Office 365 is one of the most widely used cloud products on the market today, through the tools available organisations are taking full advantage of the dynamic and collaborative workplace that 0365 creates.

For many of these organisations the subject of security in the cloud has been top of mind. They likely chose Microsoft’s product as they offer industry leading security measures, and pay close attention to privacy, compliance and accessibility to support the functionality of the productivity suite. Microsoft have invested millions into ensuring that their Cloud Infrastructure is robust, secure and available. Even so, there is still a major concern for many regarding data loss and protection when migrating to the cloud.

It’s important to remember that SaaS platform providers, like Microsoft Office 365 and AWS take on the responsibility of application uptime and the underlying infrastructure. But it's the customer’s responsibility to manage and protect their vital business data.

This is where operating a strong secure backup of SaaS data is required and it's YOUR responsibility.

Just as with any backup solution, you want the ability to quickly restore all data to an application in the event of data loss. We'll look at some of the most common ways in which your cloud data could be lost and what you can do to avoid such a disaster.

What could cause a data loss in the cloud?

Accidental deletion:

We've all done it, accidentally deleted data or removed a user and that action has been replicated across the network inadvertently losing data. We're all human at the end of the day, and we do make mistakes.  With a backup in place you can quickly restore the user and or data.

Retention policy gaps and confusion:

Office 365 retention policies are hard to keep up with, let alone manage. A backup provides longer, more accessible retention all protected and stored in one place for easy recovery.

Internal security threats:

We might not like to admit it, but the internal security threat is real and should be addressed. Ensure you have a system with a backup that's not easily accessed by potential inside threats can help you recover from any disdainful behaviour by one of your employees.

 External security threats:

The threat landscape for external threats has become headline news and represents a real and present threat to your business. Through the delivery of a backup solution, you can minimise the impact of any such attack, and ensure you're back up and running swiftly.

Legal and compliance requirements:

For many industries there are legal and regulatory compliance reasons to ensure that data is backed up and those backups are suitably secure, with encryption.

At Mirus we work with backup specialists Datto, with solutions such as Datto’s Backupify your Cloud backup can be automated to protect your organisation from data loss caused by user error, meet legal compliance needs and manage employee life cycle effectively.
