CEO Sleepout UK Post Event Update Mirus IT

The MTeam Reflects on Surviving the CEO Sleepout

Last Thursday, 7 senior managers from the MTeam donned their sleeping bags and warmest coats as they prepared for the Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout – spending a night on the cold concrete to raise funds and awareness for the city’s homeless population.

All in all, the #MTeam’s combined efforts raised £5,776 – and counting! -  for the Milton Keynes YMCA and the CEO Sleepout charities.

Having successfully conquered the trying night (and bravely returned to work the following day!), we caught up with the participants as they reflected on the trials and tribulations of homeless living.

Richard Finch, Director of Managed Print

“Even after a hearty meal and armed with a 4 seasons sleeping bag, layers of clothing and 2 big cardboard boxes it was a very cold night.

It offered a tiny insight as to what someone living on the streets night after night endures, not to mention the mental stress and fear that they have to cope with.

I wish all the team the very best in their continued efforts to raise money for a problem that shouldn’t exist in our society”

Pippa Loveridge, Head of Marketing

“I found it humbling. I was cold literally to the bone for the whole evening, despite the thermals, and I have developed a stonker of a cold. I can honestly say that, despite being in the comparable safe confines of the Stadium, we were still battling the elements, sleeping in and on cardboard boxes and kept awake by the sounds of other sleepers, the fear of being outside and the local wildlife.

Just one night in a sleeping bag has really taken its toll on my health, and my sympathy for the plight of people living without a roof over their head has increased tenfold.”

Dan Sharp, Sales Director

“As we were fortunate enough to have reasonable equipment the actual cold wasn’t so much of an issue, however, the major issue was finding a position that was comfortable on a hard cold floor.  This for me was the biggest difficulty of the night as well as the general noise and activity that’s taking place around you.

One of the things that struck me most was the tiredness the next day and how it must be to feel like this on a regular basis through the general lack of quality sleep.”

Chris Maybray, Service Delivery Director

“It was incredibly cold on the night, -1c, and the whole purpose of the sleepout became clear as we experienced what it must be like to be homeless and sleeping rough in such horrible temperatures. We were lucky enough the next night to be able to go home and back to warmth and comfort and safety – the homeless and those in extreme poverty don’t have that, and the great work of the CEO sleepout and the MK YMCA needs all the funding it can get to help bring people off the streets.”

Paul Tomlinson, Managing Director

“I thought it was manageable for one night, yet I was relieved when I knew I could go home, have a shower and sleep in the comfort of my own bed that evening. Having no certainty of when you could have your next shower, or sleep in a safe and comfortable bed, however, was a really difficult thing to comprehend”.

Peter Hack, Business Development Manager

“The worst part of the sleepout for me wasn’t the cold; it was the noise, the hard floor, and being woken up way before I was ready to get out of bed. I definitely couldn’t have done it 2 nights in a row!”

Tom Williams, Finance Director

“It was certainly a cold night and without the warmth of 90 other fellow participants it would have been a lonely and chilly night. I think that was the part that made it less difficult than it could have been, the camaraderie of everyone around you. Life really homeless would be much more bleak and solitary that our relatively easy night. Lots of money raised which is the main thing and hopefully the profile of this serious issue raised.”

The sleepout has been an eye-opener for the team, revealing just a fraction of homeless living’s myriad hardships for little more than a night. Knowing that the UK’s homeless must endure it at as a lifestyle – and not just for an evening – gives a shocking insight into their plight.
