With the excitement (and expense!) of Christmas behind us, the MTeam were expecting fewer frivolities for our first month of 2020; yet as Mirus and its clients returned from the holiday period, the MTeam still found plenty to sink its teeth into – both in and out of the office.
This month saw members of our Marketing and Procurement teams taking part in a wonderful voluntary learning initiative for local schools, while our Head of Marketing joined the judge’s panel for Young Enterprise, celebrating the efforts of young business starters nationwide.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; let’s start this month’s blog by welcoming 4 fresh new starters to our ranks.
Fabia Davies, our new Internal Systems Apprentice, will soon to be starting her course with our friends at MK College. Until then, Fabia’s off celebrating her 21st Birthday in style; or, more specifically, in Japan. Have a great time Fabia - bring us back some ‘Wagashi’, hmm?
Let’s also welcome Alex Ayling, our brand new Service Desk Team Leader for the Yellow Team. With almost 20 years of IT experience, he’s bringing plenty of skills to the table.
So too is Catalina Costas, our new Field Services Technician - who couldn’t even wait a week before jumping into her first on-site client job!
Finally, Michelle Butler joins us as our brand new Office Manager. A slightly different role from her last – flying around the world as cabin crew – but equally challenging!
We hope you’re all settling nicely into the MTeam!
Having gleefully welcomed some new faces to the MTeam, it’s about time we celebrated the achievements of our more familiar ones. Our Colleague of the Month for January was …
Simon Mason! Simon’s been a real asset to the MTeam since returning a few months ago and is clearly settling back into the role very smoothly.
Some of his feedback is:
“An all-round nice chap”
“He amuses me”
“Since returning to Mirus he’s been on fire, improving processes and delivering excellent service to our clients”
“Always cheerful, happy to help and wants to make things better”
Simon’s return has definitely pleased a few of the long-term Mirus members and made life a lot better for some of our newer faces too, so well done Simon – and welcome back!
On the 16th January, our Head of Marketing Pippa Loveridge and Marketing Apprentice Ronni Murray attended the Worktree Career WorkOut at Oakgrove School, Milton Keynes. The two discussed their careers, and the awesome Mirus Marketing team and sat down with Year 9 students to work through the Work tree S.T.E.P.S: Self-management, Teamwork, Enterprise awareness, Problem solving and Speaking and listening. Handshake training was also in full force!
Ronni – “It was really nice to be asked some great questions from the year 9s, who were about to choose their GCSEs, and introduce them to apprenticeship schemes - which a few of them had never heard of.”
A week later, Ali Khan, our Internal Business Developer and Imogen Carpenter, our Procurement Specialist also took part in a Worktree Career Workout - this time at Hazeley Academy in Milton Keynes. Talking to the ever-excitable year 7s, they encouraged pupils to work hard in school and apply that hard work into the progress of their careers.
Imogen – “The activity was an eye opener. Young people don’t know much about apprenticeships and are being pushed to do A-levels and go to University. A few young people were inspired to consider an apprenticeship in the future, helping them get into their job role quicker and earn whilst they learn.”
You can read more about their day in this blog here.
The Worktree event isn’t all the tireless Pippa Loveridge got up to this month. Our indefatigable Marketing Manager also judged at the Young Enterprise event for the second year running.
Young Enterprise UK, through their events, education and training, provide young people with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the ever-changing world of work. The Milton Keynes event celebrated the National Winners for 2019, who were selected for their entrepreneurial ingenuity.
There were 45 teams entered this year from Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire & Hertfordshire, and each trade stand was judged on 4 key categories:
- Customer Service
- Trade Stand
There would also be one overall winner, chosen for their outstanding achievements in all 4 fields.
- Trade Stand Winners: Bedrock (Chesham Grammar); runners up Good Earth (Aylesbury Grammar)
- Sustainability Winners: Hanabi (Kingsthorpe College); Runner up Climate Crew (Bloxham School)
- Customer Service Winners: Mindful (Aylesbury Grammar); Runner up No Target (Kimberley College)
- Product winners: Sea Glass Jewellery (Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School); Runner up Hanabi (Kingsthorpe College)
Congratulations to all those who won awards, and especially to Hanabi, who were the overall winners of this awesome event!
Of course, we couldn’t have ended the month without our monthly Friday feed. This time we were treated to a lovely traditional breakfast fry up - which the MTeam, true to form, demolished! Thanks to newcomer Michelle for kicking off her new role as Office Manager in style!
We started January with a pace more befitting this cold and collected month, but in the typical Mirus fashion, it couldn’t stay that way for long. February is already jam-packed full of potential (and we do love our jam suitably packed, I assure you), with some more industry award results on the horizon and a Battle of the Bands between us and other IT Lab offices. With some coming from as far afield as South Africa, it’s set to be a truly globe-trotting contest!
We’re as prepared as ever to make 2020 another stunning year. See you again in March!
