Meet Tom Williams - Taking Part in the Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout

The Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout begins on November 7th, with various members of the Mirus MTeam will be taking part in the charitable cause.

The CEO Sleepout is a nationwide event in which company CEOs drop the relative comfort of their beds - or indeed, their work offices - and spend the night sleeping in one of the city's most open areas. The goal is to raise funds and awareness for the UK's growing homeless populace, and with events happening in London, Nottingham, Manchester and beyond, it's a superb opportunity to make a difference.

This year, the CEO Sleepout will take place around the MK Dons football stadium, and no less than 6 of the Mirus team will be taking part. We caught up with Finance Director Tom Williams to see how he'll be contributing to - and preparing for - his night beneath the stars.

What made you want to take part in this year's CEO Sleepout?

"In Milton Keynes, the severity of the homeless situation is becoming more and more apparent. There's a number of 'homes under bridges' that have developed in the city, and it feels like their population grows week after week; it's clear that there's nowhere else for the underprivileged to go. As the executives and professionals of MK, the least we can do the community is to help raise awareness and resolve the situation in whatever way we can."

Will you be preparing in any way for the rough night ahead, or are you going in blind?

"I'm going in completely blind - I want to treat the event like a voyage of discovery."

What do you predict will be the most difficult hardship to overcome?

"Probably the cold. Or the rain. Or the snow! For me, preparing for any of these will be the main challenge. I can only really take whatever shelter is available at the time. Cardboard boxes will be provided, and they're the only thing I can justify using if I were to do this CEO Sleepout properly."

As far as I can see there are no limitations to the event itself - such as the clothing you can wear, the provisions you can bring, or even the choice to take any water. It sounds like you plan to impose a few limitations on yourself for the purpose of the CEO Sleepout.

"Anything else just wouldn't be in the spirit of the event. As far as I'm concerned, I've signed up to a sleeping bag and a football pitch, and aside from maybe a jumper or a coat, there'll be no creature comforts on hand!"

Well, Tom, we wish you all the best!

Tom won't be going it alone on the night, as many other Milton Keynes CEO will be joining him under the stars. He'll also be joined by the familiar faces of Mirus's Paul Tomlinson, Peter Hack, Richard Finch, Dan Sharp and Chris Maybray - the latter two appearing in a recent episode of our Sofa Time video series.

In the weeks leading up to the event, we hope to catch up with the rest of the team to see how they're preparing for the CEO Sleepout.
