Meet Chris Maybray – Taking Part in the Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout

The Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout begins on November 7th, and various members of the Mirus MTeam will be taking part in the charitable cause.

Most of us spend our nights in the safety and comfort of our own homes and beds - but for the nation's homeless, there's no such luxury. The CEO Sleepout, a nationwide charity event, sees company leaders spending a night on the streets; cold, alone and without shelter, all to raise funds and awareness for their city's homeless populaiton. The goal is to raise funds and awareness for the UK's growing homeless populace, and with events happening in London, Nottingham, Manchester and beyond, it's a superb opportunity to make a difference.

This year, the CEO Sleepout will take place around the MK Dons football stadium, and no less than 7 of the Mirus team will be taking part in the Milton Keynes event’s only joint effort. We caught up with Service Delivery Director Chris Maybray to see how he'll be contributing to - and preparing for - his night beneath the stars.

What made you want to take part in this year's CEO Sleepout?

I personally always try and help people who are homeless – you don’t know why they are homeless and what horrible situation got them into that position - but whilst they are in it then we all need to help. I regularly buy lunch (and dog food) for people I see on the street. An especially memorable incident was walking through an underpass at midnight earlier this year. I said good evening to a homeless couple who told me they were debating; if they could have a chocolate bar now which one would they have? When I got to my hotel I picked up my car, drove to a petrol station, found the chocolate bars they listed then walked back into the underpass (bit scary at half past midnight!) and gave them their chocolate bars! It’s a tiny thing, but it gave them the opportunity to test who had chosen the best bar! It’s sad that there are so few opportunities to help the homeless, as there are so many out there still on the streets and still in need of support;

Will you be preparing in any way for the rough night ahead, or are you going in blind?

I’ll be going in blind – I think the shock will drive home the reality of homelessness better.

What do you predict will be the most difficult hardship to overcome?

Honestly? The cold and the lack of any ability to escape to somewhere warm!

Well Chris, we wish you the best of luck! Thankfully, Chris won’t be all alone on the night. As we mentioned, Mirus is, at the time of writing, the only group effort in the Milton Keynes CEO Sleepout.
