We caught up with Mandy for our 'Women in IT 2020' series of blogs.

What made you choose/inspired you to take up a career in IT/with Mirus IT?Mandy Wilkinson International Womens Day 2020 on the beach

What appealed to me about working for Mirus was most definitely the job role. At the very start of my career I worked in the Quality department of Ingram Micro, conducting internal audits and contributing the business improvement. I loved the job, but made a choice to leave it to bring up my young family, at the time flexible working hours weren’t as prevalent for woman as they are now.

Years later I was fortunate that my mum took early retirement and I was able to consider what my career might look like. During a recent job search I was contacted by Mirus regarding a similar Quality role which was coincidentally in the same building that I had worked in some 20 years earlier – it felt like fate.

At my final job interview it was apparent that Mirus were all about doing the right thing and they were happy to provide me with support and training to develop the role and make it my own. Whilst I had another 2 job offers on the table, following this interview for me the decision was easy.

I 100% made the right decision and just over a year later I was promoted to Compliance Manager.

What do you love most about working in IT/ at Mirus IT?
Conducting Internal Audits gives me the opportunity to navigate all departments getting an insight into the differing business functions and how they all come together to support our customers. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to be able to drive and implement improvements that contribute to effective running of the business.

Mandy Wilkinson International Womens Day 2020SMT have always been tremendously supportive and as a business professional they have empowered me to work with key stakeholder to implement change.

With the recent acquisition by IT Lab, my job has grown further with me taking on the role of Interim Quality Manager for IT Lab for their ISO 9001 certification and also providing consultation to them in support of their other ISO standards. I have been able to share Mirus best practice and implement some of this within the IT Lab group.

Do you think more women should consider tech roles, and why?
Whilst historically a male dominated environment to work in, we are now seeing a rise in the number of women in the IT industry, which is reflective of the way the industry is progressing.

Mirus are definitely embracing this with recent hire’s within technical roles, I can think of at least 4 within the last few months.

What struggles, or opinions if any, have you encountered along the way?
Within Mirus I have no struggles or negative opinions to report.

Do you feel like your gender has affected your treatment or experience in the industry?
No.

Who's your idol?
My great Aunt Amy was an incredibly strong and independent woman. She served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War and in her time overcame some extremely challenging times. Over the years I have definitely taken inspiration from her. I love to tell my own 2 daughters about her in hope they will also feel motivated and empowered to be that strong and independent woman.

What do you like to do outside of work, any hobbies?
Dog walking
Eating out
Spending time with my family

Thanks for your time Mandy, it's great to have you on the #MTeam!

Keep an eye on our main International Women's Day blog over the week as we recognise the women of Mirus and champion the rise of  women in this vibrant industry!
