Case Studies: St Paul's School

ICT for Schools and Education

St Paul’s Catholic School is a mixed comprehensive for students between 11 and 19 years of age with a thriving and successful reputation, being awarded Outstanding by Ofsted in 2008. As a growing school, they have a continuing need to offer innovative technology to their students to enhance IT based learning. The IT team in the school work hard to maintain their infrastructure, but seek expert advice from a variety of technology partners.

The Challenge

In 2012, the IT team at St Paul’s faced the challenge of understanding and being confident in their historic infrastructure, whilst striving to take a forward thinking approach to IT strategy and how they could best invest in future IT systems and solutions. With the usual budgetary trends and constraints, St Paul’s were looking for a trusted advisor to be able to plan the most effective use of technology to match their ambitions, whilst being cost-effective and meeting the strict deadlines imposed.

St Paul’s also wanted to find a support provider that could be positioned as an extension of the IT Team, offering 3rd line support and consultancy, and remain on-hand for developments throughout the year.

The Solution

Mirus IT conducted a full review of all aspects of the technology environment at St Paul’s to identify opportunities for both improved performance and cost efficiencies.

User Device Procurement – Mirus IT reviewed all the user devices in place, at both the staff and student levels, for laptops, desktops, mobile devices, and the accompanying licences. This meant that, through Mirus IT’s leverage with leading technology vendors, procurement of new and replacement hardware was sourced at a competitive rate. St Paul’s have also extensively invested in Apple iPads and Apple Support from Mirus to better manage seamless communications between departments whilst on campus, and from home during extended hours.

Server Consolidation – Mirus IT successfully completed a project which analysed their current server infrastructure, including storage and backup, and then redesigned and reconfigured it to allow for future growth and an increased operational load. Using VMware and Veeam technologies, Mirus were able to implement a more efficient setup across multiple servers and storage devices to provide a resilient and highly available core to their infrastructure.

Consultancy & Support – Mirus IT have been involved in various smaller projects such as procuring storage and specialist licenses, and have advised how to choose solutions and products based on an in depth knowledge of the school’s plans and strategy. St Paul’s also have 3rd line support from Mirus IT for occasions when a technical problem requires specific expert knowledge to resolve.

As a value added service, Mirus offer Pre-Sales and Account Manager Consultancy, at no extra cost, in order to help the IT team keep up to date with current and future technologies, aiding them to deliver a reliable IT system to the students and teachers. St Paul’s work closely with Mirus IT to ensure their investments are in line with their strategy, and that they continue to provide their students with a reliable and future thinking learning platform.

The Results

The relationship between St Paul’s and Mirus IT brings some great benefits to the school. Historically projects have enhanced their infrastructure and the future will bring new and exciting solutions to the ever growing complement of students and teachers.
