It can be a daunting challenge leaving the fierce, regimented world of the armed forces and being abruptly thrown into a corporate lion’s den of job searching and CV writing. We often hear stories about how ex-military personnel can struggle to adapt back into civilian life, and many have a tough time finding a job.
Inspired by the courage and dedication of the armed forces, CompTIA has created the ‘Armed for IT’ careers programme, a recruitment business designed to provide opportunities and resources for service leavers, ex-service personnel and veterans interested in starting a new career. The abundance of core abilities that you need to succeed in the armed forces are very transferable into the IT sector once combined with industry certifications.
“Veterans with the right mix of business, communication and technical skills can find long-lasting and rewarding careers in the IT industry. Skills certifications are a valuable first step in transitioning from active duty to civilian life. The IT industry offers a range of jobs for which someone with military training and leadership skills can be a perfect fit.”
Theo Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO of CompTIA
There are three main components to the programme: Learning, Certification and then Employment. Colleges and universities play an integral role through this ‘Learn-Certify-Work’ model by educating veterans at the college level required to be certified IT professionals, which is the important second step on their path to a successful career in IT.
We will be actively showcasing our participation in this innovative recruitment program during ‘Responsible business week’ which runs from today through to the 4th April 2014 on social media. Please use this hashtag to show your support #RBWeek
We want to actively encourage other businesses to follow our lead and get their names on the corporate registry, which is the list of companies and organisations who support veterans, ex-service personnel and service leaver’s transition into a new IT career in their organisations through this programme.
So play your part in helping our veterans and become the final step. Open your doors to a fresh pool of skilled, certified and talented workers by signing your business up to the registry today.
